June 16^th every year is the Day of the African Child. The commemoration of this day originates from the valiant children who stood up against the apartheid Government in the streets of Soweto in South Africa for better quality education on 16th June 1976. 

This years Guest of Honor in Malawi, Minister of Gender, Children, Disabilities and Social Welfare (MoGCDSW), Dr. Jean Kalilani urged people in the country to join hands in stopping the abduction and killing of people with albinism during the national commemoration at Chiwembu Community Ground in Mwanza district.

Chikondi is an 11-year-old girl who lives in a small and remote village about 400 kilometers south of Malawi’s capital city, Lilongwe. She is the eldest of 5 children. Her parents are struggling small scale farmers who do the best they can to take care of their family.

Chikondi is in Grade 3 and loves everything about mathematics. However, she does not get a chance to learn math as often as she would like.

Oxfam, Concern Universal, Concern Worldwide, Save the Children and GOAL today welcomed the Government of Malawi’s decision to declare an emergency in response to a further looming hunger in the country. They called on the Government, Malawi’s donors and the international community to immediately respond to this declaration by providing the necessary support to meet the scale of the food crisis.

Sometimes, life becomes hard in almost every aspect – no money, no clothes and not even the slightest idea of where the next meal will come from. This is what Loveness Jemusi went through for many years of her life.

Timidly posing for the camera but eager to share her story, Loveness from Kalombo Village in Mchinji district said she has been through a lot as a young girl growing up. These hard times forced Loveness and her siblings to do some piece work for their survival; and while she was in Standard 4, things got worse such that she dropped out of school. 

News recently rocked the country that blood banks and hospitals have been experiencing acute shortages of blood. As a result, preventable deaths have been occurring at hospitals.

Recently at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH), the second largest referral hospital in the country – thousands of people have been in need of blood. There were 19 avoidable deaths at KCH over the course of a weekend in mid February, largely due to a shortage of blood.
