Raising Hope Amid Difficult Realities

At 47, Magret Mcheka from Traditional Authority (TA) Sitola in Machinga District, has endured more tough times than most people would expect in a lifetime. In 2010 she lost her mother and husband, leaving her with four children to raise. Her health started deteriorating and she consequently discovered that she is HIV positive. This, however, did not deter her from striving to give the best to her children and she started brewing kachasu, a local beer.

Jessie Williams’ Story: Motherly Guidance in the Promotion of Girls’ Education

Mother groups have been a crucial community structure working with the Keeping Girls in School (KGIS) Project in facilitating the readmission of girl dropouts and supporting girl victims by reporting and referring cases of violence against children and the rehabilitation of victimized girls. Their outstanding work and solid commitment with the communities continues to ensure that no girl is left behind with their education.

Before coming to Malawi I would never have guessed I would become an advocate for babies.

It is 5:00AM, the weather looks promising, the day looks very bright as well. Tiyamike* smiles as she yawns and reluctantly wakes up to face the day, after all its Monday, and she needs to go school. Tiyamike* 16, has always dreamt of becoming an influential woman in her society and country, an Education Minister. She goes to school everyday eager to learn something new that will shape her future.
