9-year-old Emilida was all smiles after receiving a Math textbook from her teacher at Mphande Primary School in Mphande Education zone, Mwanza District. Her face shone brightly with joy even when chatting with her fellow grade 3 friends under a tree during break time.

Children have called upon government to step up and ensure that child rights violators face stiffer penalties for crimes against children’s rights in particular for those who marry children under the age of 18. The children argued that most perpetrators are getting away easily for crimes that they are committing against children.

In January 2017, 24-year-old Philemon Chimbalu from Nkhatabay District, northern Malawi joined Nkhuluzi Tigwirizane Youth Club. He had one goal in mind when joining: raise money through the village savings and loans (VSL) – a component under the youth club so that he could prepare for migration to South Africa in search of greener pastures.
By this time, Philemon was married and had two children. Philemon attests it was not easy to provide for his family.
