Struggling to Survive: the Effects of El Niño on Malawi

We have reached a stage where climate change can no longer be looked at as a fallacy – in Malawi it is evidently taking away people’s livelihoods. Today in Malawi, droughts and floods are more severe and frequent than they used to be.

A study by the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) has shown that the climatic phenomenon, El Niño is responsible for putting up to 6.5 million people (39% of the country’s population) at risk of being food insecure during the 2016/17 consumption period.

Every Child has a Right to Life: Protect Children with Albinism

June 16th every year is the Day of the African Child. The commemoration of this day originates from the valiant children who stood up against the apartheid Government in the streets of Soweto in South Africa for better quality education on 16th June 1976. 

This years Guest of Honor in Malawi, Minister of Gender, Children, Disabilities and Social Welfare (MoGCDSW), Dr. Jean Kalilani urged people in the country to join hands in stopping the abduction and killing of people with albinism during the national commemoration at Chiwembu Community Ground in Mwanza district.

NO CHILD Should Be Left Behind. I agree, do you?

Chikondi is an 11-year-old girl who lives in a small and remote village about 400 kilometers south of Malawi’s capital city, Lilongwe. She is the eldest of 5 children. Her parents are struggling small scale farmers who do the best they can to take care of their family.

Chikondi is in Grade 3 and loves everything about mathematics. However, she does not get a chance to learn math as often as she would like.

International Agencies Call for Urgent Action as Malawi Declares a Food Emergency

Oxfam, Concern Universal, Concern Worldwide, Save the Children and GOAL today welcomed the Government of Malawi’s decision to declare an emergency in response to a further looming hunger in the country. They called on the Government, Malawi’s donors and the international community to immediately respond to this declaration by providing the necessary support to meet the scale of the food crisis.
