Child Protection

The theme of this year’s commemoration of the World Day against Child Labour is “No to child labour, yes to quality education” This theme highlights the importance of basic education in the elimination of child labour.

In an agro based society such as Malawi where children start farming at a tender age, children are even more at risk of going into child labour and get exposed to hazardous work conditions. When children of school going age are not in school, where are they?  

Following the accountability workshop that took place from the 8^th to the 9^th of October 2014 at the Sun n Sand Holiday Resort in Mangochi district, the Violence Against Children (VAC) project conducted accountability exercises in Balaka district with its implementing partner, CHINANSI Foundation. The exercises took place from the 28^th to the 30^th of October. It involved stakeholder orientations and consultations on information sharing and complaints and feedback mechanisms. 

On Friday 25^th July 2014, Save the Children’s Malawi Country Office celebrated the arrival of three vehicles and four motorcycles as assets provided with support from the European Union for a Child Protection project that fights Violence Against Children (VAC) in Malawi.

On 16th June 1976, roughly ten thousand black South African school children marched the streets of Soweto to protest against a devised education agenda by the apartheid regime.

On the commemoration of this year’s World Day Against Child Labour, we thought of giving you a snapshot of what we, in the NGO community are doing to address this malaise. Since Malawi ratified the ILO conventions 138 on minimum age and 182 on worst forms of child labour, NGOs have continued to play a complementary role to government efforts in the elimination of child labour.
