Save the Children Donates Items Worth Over MK3.5 Million to Mangochi District Hospital

Thursday 16 October 2014

On 12th October 2014, Save the Children reaffirmed its commitment towards the welfare of mothers and under-five children when it donated items worth MK3.75 million in Mangochi district during this year’s Mothers’ Day Fun Run event, an annual event organised by Nation Publications Limited.

Speaking during the ceremony, Richard Luhanga, Facility Maternal and Newborn Health (MNH) Specialist for Save the Children, reaffirmed the commitment Save the Children has towards mothers.

“As Save the Children, we will continue to work with our partners to ensure that no child under the age of five dies from preventable causes and that no woman dies while giving birth.” Luhanga said.

Apart from the donation, Save the Children runs various programmes in the district with a similar cause.

“Save the Children will continue to support the District Health Office in Mangochi through our Support for Service Delivery Integration (SSDI) programme as well as other districts and the Ministry of Health at national level in order to ensure better health for mothers, newborns and children in Malawi.” Luhanga added.

During the event, Save the Children donated two oxygen concentrators, 20 delivery packs, neonatal digital weighing scales and thermometers worth over MK3.5 million.

The donation was presented after the Fun Run, which raised a historic MK31.5 million for Mangochi District Hospital and its satellite health facilities.

In her remarks, the guest of honor at the event, the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Health Committee Hon. Juliana Lunguzi, challenged businesspeople, politicians, corporate partners and other well-wishers to emulate NPL and its partners in coming up with innovative ways of making money for the health sector so that expectant women stop dying needlessly.

The fun run is one of NPL’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects whose aim is at raising funds for the purchase of medical supplies and equipment for the maternity wings of facilities in the country. Save the Children has been a strategic partner in this annual event.

The event has now crocked 10 years since its inception in 2005 and has raised over K100 million for 13 health facilities across the country. Next year’s event will be held in Mchinji district and partners have been urged to patronise the event in their large numbers.
