Raising Children’s Hope Amid Cyclone Challenging Realities

Save the Children on Sunday, 19^th March, provided relief assistance to two children who had earlier on told the organisation they had lost various items including learning materials and clothes to Tropical Cyclone Freddy.

Save the Children is distributing food and other essential items as well as psychosocial support to displaced children and their families currently living in camps after the devastating storm in the southern region.

But on Sunday, 19^th March, Save the Children, visited 14-year-old Chrissy* and 16-year-old James*, learners from Blantyre, whose houses have been damaged by the storm.

The two children had specifically asked the organisation for support through an interview as they shared how Cyclone Freddy had impacted their lives.

Save the Children responded by providing them clothes, exercise books and other learning materials.

It was all smiles for Chrissy* and James* who said the assistance will help them as they prepare for their examinations next month.

“I am happy that at last I have received this support, we had no hope as to where support will come from, I am therefore thankful to Save the Children for the gesture,” Said James, who is preparing to sit for primary school leaving certificate exam.

Chrissy* hailed Save the Children for the quick response to their plea for support. However, Chrissie is still in need of support to rebuild her home

"I am very happy with the clothes and school materials that i have received from Save the Children. This has raised my hopes of returning to school. I am also hopeful that we will receive support to rebuild our home and we will return to it. Currently, Iam staying  with relations," she says. 

Preliminary reports suggest that over 140,000 children have been affected by the cyclone which made landfall in Malawi on Sunday 12^th March 2023.
